Dems seek Special Counsel for Gonzales Perjury

From CNN:

A group of Senate Democrats called Thursday for a special counsel to investigate whether Attorney General Alberto Gonzales perjured himself during Capitol Hill testimony.

Sen. Charles Schumer joins other Democrats calling for a special counsel to investigate the attorney general.

One of the Senate’s harshest critics of the attorney general, New York Sen. Charles Schumer, said he and other Democrats want to look into “potential perjury” by Gonzales during a hearing Tuesday.

“His inability to answer simple and straightforward questions was just stunning,” Schumer said. “Instead he tells the half-truth, the partial truth and everything but the truth.”

Schumer said a letter to the solicitor general calls for the special counsel to come from outside the Justice Department. Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, Dianne Feinstein of California and Russ Feingold of Wisconsin also said they signed the letter.

“I have never seen an attorney general so contemptuous of Congress and his role as chief law enforcement officer of the United States,” said Feinstein.

That contempt shared, of course, by the entire White House, which responded through spokesman Tony Fratto, “Every day this Congress gets a little more out of control.”

Commenter Puppetmaster at Firedoglake nailed it:

Translated White House: “Congress is out of our control.”

To which I would add, booyah! It’s about fucking time.
