Time to change the subject?

Charles Keating

Charles Keating

Am I the only one who thinks that stories suggesting that a Resolution Trust Corporation-type solution to the current financial market woes, and stories comparing today’s problems with the S&L meltdown in the late 1980’s, aren’t the best thing for John McCain?

And that, perhaps, he may not be the best person to rail against a”culture of influence peddling,” given his personal history and the, um, substantial number of lobbyists tied to his campaign?

This is just a bad week for McCain. I’m sure there will be events that tilt in his direction, but a meltdown enabled by massive deregulation pushed by a key economic adviser and supported by McCain isn’t one of them.

P.S. As an aside, in the late 1990’s I oversaw finance for 20th Century Fox’s animation facility in Phoenix, Arizona, which was based in the former Phoenix headquarters of Lincoln Savings and Loan.

I was assured when I arrived that there were no stashes of cash in the walls.
