You mean the help gets to talk like this all the time?

Ann Romney, last seen telling us peasants that two one year of tax returns is plenty for us, actually, and we should just be quiet, is back.

With Republicans in full-on freakout mode over the rapidly submerging Romney campaign, it has been left to Ann to remind us of our place.

This is hard and, you know, it’s an important thing that we’re doing right now and it’s an important election and it is time for all Americans to realize how significant this election is and how lucky we are to have someone with Mitt’s qualifications and experience and know-how to be able to have the opportunity to run this country. [emphasis mine]

Well, sure. I can only imagine that running for President is hard. One of the few things that might be harder is actually running the country. Which is why campaigns that are transparently incompetent are doubly bad: not only do they fail to do what they’re supposed to do (attract voters to their side), they actively do the opposite, convincing voters that their candidate isn’t up to the job.

Now, I will say that being a political spouse must be brutal. Every day the person you love most gets slammed (and, in Mitt’s case, it’s allegedly friendly fire), and a lot of those attacks are both biting and unfair. But Ann Romney has a gift for…well, this tweet sums it up:

Apparently, when Mitt said he didn’t want voters to “get tired” of Ann, he had inside information.

The impression I get from this is that Romneys are feeling beleaguered. They know they’re losing and they know they’re screwing up, and yet they still have to hear lesser people say so out loud.

Sadly, the people Mitt doesn’t like right now aren’t people he can just fire.
